Face to Face is the long awaited second book in the Tangata Whenua series and follows on from First Footprints, which covered Polynesian settlement in New Zealand. Face to Face looks at the arrival of Europeans, how they settled in New Zealand and, more importantly, the relationships, good and bad, they developed with Maori.

It explores New Zealand’s past in the context of classical Maori culture and first contact with Europeans. These dynamics took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and had a strong influence on later events such as the Treaty of Waitangi. The events and consequences of these interactions form essential learning about New Zealand’s heritage and culture, both in the past and for the future.

Face to Face has been written to the requirements of Level 5 of the new curriculum and is aimed at students in Years 9 and 10. It responds directly to achievement outcomes, as specified in NZC and covers the Key Competencies and Values.
