COURSE MODULES:

Module 1: Persuasive Writing

School based essays are completely different from exam style essays. In this course, students will learn how to structure and write an effective piece of writing in less than 30 minutes. Specifically, students will learn to:

  • Formulate a contention
  • Brainstorm arguments quickly
  • Plan an essay
  • Write a winning introduction
  • Structure body paragraphs
  • Write a rebuttal statement
  • Write a conclusion

Module 2: Creative Writing

Creative essays can be difficult for many students because they may not know how to structure their essays effectively, brainstorm, organise and develop complex ideas effectively, put thoughts on paper and do all the above in less than 30 minutes!

This course aims to do all the above and more by teaching students how to:

  • Revise sentence structures
  • Structure creative essays
  • Plan creative essays
  • Write an engaging hook
  • Apply writing techniques to move the story forward
  • Write an effective cliffhanger and conclusion

Module 3: Numerical Reasoning

Numerical reasoning tests a student's ability to think and reason using numbers. Student will often struggle with this area because they may not be familiar with the content, they may not have an efficient strategy or they may not know how to link topics together to have a deep enough understanding to effectively reason through increasingly complex problems within the given 30 minute timeframe.

Over 25 mini digestible lessons, this course aims to address these issues in a systematic way by guiding them through how to solve:

  • Patterns and sequences gradually increasing in difficulty
  • Number puzzles and matrices
  • Problems involving diagrams
  • Reasoning problems using arithmetic and algebra gradually increasing in difficulty

Module 4: Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning measures a student's ability to think and reason using words and language. Students often find these test items difficult because they may not have a limited vocabulary, they may not have a firm grasp of English language conventions or be familiar with efficient strategies to tackle specific questions all in the space of 30 minutes!

Over 20 mini lessons, this course aims to address these problems by teaching students how to:

  • Exponentially increase students' word power
  • Become familiar with and tackle different types of questions relating to vocabulary, word relationships, classification as well as logical reasoning and deduction in a systematic way
  • Apply grammar and spelling rules to solve different types of verbal reasoning questions

Module 5: Mathematical Reasoning

Mathematical reasoning measures a student's ability to answer questions relating to number, measurement, algebra, space and data. This exam can be difficult for many students because test items can include topics that may be several years ahead of a student's existing year level. Additionally, mathematical reasoning concepts can be increasingly complex and if students are unfamiliar with how topics may link together, it will be difficult for them to select an appropriate and efficient strategy to suit the specific question they need to answer.  Through this course, we have successfully managed to condense relevant topics from Year 7 to Year 10 in an easy to understand and engaging course to guide students through the mathematical reasoning section.

Over 49 lessons, this course aims to break down mathematics in a way that will help them feel confident with this section. In particular, we will guide students through specific strategies on how to:

  • Calculate quickly and efficiently saving valuable time and working space on the exam
  • Become more familiar to different types of questions increasing in complexity across algebra, geometry/ measurement, chance and data
  • Essential tips and techniques to solve problems efficiently and accurately

Module 6: Reading Comprehension

Without the right strategy, reading comprehension can be very challenging for many students. This exam measures a student's ability to read and interpret meaning from written passages with some questions also requiring students to correct, complete and punctuate sentences.

It's often challenging for many students who may lack concentration while reading, connect ideas in the passage, gloss over detail, have difficulty distinguishing significant information from minor details and are often confused about the meaning of words and sentences.

This course is broken up into four main sections and aims to address the above challenges and more in the following way:

  • In the first section of this course, students will learn essential speed reading skills.
  • The second section will outline specific approaches on how to answer the different types of questions students will likely be faced with
  • In the third section, students will be introduced to some of the specific text types that may appear on the exam
  • The final section will go through grammar, punctuation and spelling questions may also appear on the exam.
